The Engineers at Dodge got it right (amazing electronics amenities).
We recently took a family vacation to Florida and decided to drive the 17 hr trip instead of flying 2 adults and three boys under 10 yrs old. Our family vehicle wasn’t ideal for the trip so we rented a new Dodge Caravan.
The amenities are what made this vehicle so amazing–but it’s not what you think.
It had NO GPS, NO DVD player with two displays and 4 headphones, no 12-way adjustable seats, NO power side door and power rear hatch. Bare bones–you get the picture.
So why did I think the amenities were so incredible? It DID have EXACTLY what we needed most—but would not have thought about until we started using the car.
Lots of storage space—hidden under the floor! Flexible seating arrangements—because the boys need to be “rotated” like used tires. And LOTS of cupholders. I lost count of how many cupholders there were but my wife and boys was acutely aware of every one.
For electronics, there was no fancy DVD system, but it did have a little “AUX” jack in the front panel of the stereo. Why is this cool? Because I always bring my laptop anyway and it has a huge screen, embedded DVD player, and enough digital content to keep them occupied well into the night. We simply plugged in the laptop (two accessory power outlets available) and by the time the opening credits were underway—IWP was achieved (Instant World Peace). We could all enjoy the movie soundtrack through the speaker system.
During the day, we would play recorded content, or stream any of over 2 million tracks from Rhapsody. We almost drove off the road because we were laughing so hard listening to classic Bill Cosby stand-up recordings (Rhapsody had over 390 of his tracks available).
The point of my story is that many electronics systems are full of expensive gimmicks that sound great from all the marketing—but in actual use are often not worth the slice of budget they consume. Some features are not used immediately, but the fact that they are there right when you need them makes them worth every penny.
