Converting a playroom into a Home Theater
Watch the DistinctAV process in action in this 2-part series as we follow homeowners Ed & Sonia’s basement remodel project.
Part 1 - Design & Decisions
The first part of any DistinctAV project is defining and clarifying your needs. Like most people, Sonia had trouble visualizing the final project and was concerned that the results would not accurately represent her exact needs.
After our initial consultation, we captured their needs and provided some creative solutions. Then the entire plan was transformed into a 3-D model so all the trades involved knew exactly what was involved. This also helped keep costs down and the project moving along quickly.
User Requirements Specification
Neat & Tidy theater room for the entire family. Hide the Toys when not in use.
Tuck game systems away in a cabinet when not in use.
Ticket booth/Theater concession stand w/popcorn popper.
In-wall speakers.
Lighting controls via the remote.
Very easy to use and operate system.
Drop-down screen to protect it from projectile toys.
Starfield ceiling for fun and to avoid dark painted ceiling.
Close-in the room using sliders if possible.
Seating for 4-6.
Done in a timely manner without too much construction mess.
After learning about the benefits of an integrated electronics system, they also added to their requirements:
Advanced pre-wire to existing TVs in the Living room and Sun Room for future integration.
Connecting the theater with the existing house audio system.
Part 2 - Construction
Stay tuned and check on our progress as we venture into the construction phase. They requested a completion date of “before Christmas”. So far, we’re on track for a pre-Thanksgiving completion.
The room was completed on time and within the budget. Ed & Sonia enjoyed accessorizing the room and even the bath with themed and customized items.
"We had bids from 2 other firms in Carmel and we are so glad we chose DistinctAV. This was not a large project but they treated this project like it was their own theater. Derek’s recommendations down to every detail were exactly what we wanted. We absolutely love the room and are looking forward to the next phase of expanding the system to the rest of the house." - Ed & Sonia
